Our museographic approach for the temporary exhibition ‘La Chine de Monsieur Thiers’ creates rich, welcoming spaces within the gallery’s overall spatial volume. The space is loosely divided into display zones for the enfilade of thematic display sections, combining both the intimacy of each display with alluring views from one thematic section to the next and beyond.
This exhibition presents Chinese art through the eyes of a French politician who built up his collection of objets d’art at the beginning of the 19th century to serve his social ambitions and become one of the precursors of a new relationship with Asia. His collection includes objects that reflect both Asian cultures (eg Buddhism, Taoism, imperial art) and the different strata of European-Asian history (eg East India companies, colonisation…)
